AIGLX + Gnome 2.16 = Brutalidade
“[Gnome 2.16] also takes the first steps into the advancing age of eye candy: windows that wobble, vanish, fade, shrink, or explode — such effects are possible due to ongoing advancements of graphics hardware,” the team writes in the release notes.
“Some of these changes are still under development, and are not enabled by default: you need to use a special configuration to use them. Nevertheless, they provide a peek into the age to come.”
Metacity, Gnome’s default window manager, makes its first steps into the world of 3D accelerated desktop computing. Many extensions to its compositor engine let your windows wobble, shrink, explode, fade in and out, bounce on window focus, and show other interesting, unusual or funny effects such as having different transparency for different window types like menus, dialogs, and main windows, says the team.
But, warns Vincent Untz, member of the Gnome release team, “it’s an ongoing work and more will come in 2.18.”
Once Metacity is compiled with the correct option, the effects can be turned on and off without a restart or new login, and applications can take advantage of this. For example, the Gnome terminal can now offer real transparency.

Numa altura em que os “Vista fans” não se calam com os efeitos 3d e o camandro, no universo Linux estão a começar a ser incluÃdos, de origem, o AIGLX (com o novo Xorg 7.1) e como podem ver acima, o “windows manager” do Gnome também já vem todo artilhado, para poder correr em toda a sua beleza, sem ter que instalar Compiz/Beril, que como já sabem, está muito manhoso e só funciona quando e onde lhe apetece.
Existe depois a abordagem do XGL, que é por agora a mais compatÃvel, mas que ou muito me engano ou vai ser rapidamente esquecida, factor inerente à sua natureza pouco praticável. O XGL é um window manager em si, e tem que funcionar numa sessão à parte, enquanto que o AIGLX está, como está claro, introduzido no “core” do Xorg.
Entretanto, o Mandriva 2007 e o Ubuntu Edgy Eft já vêm com este mundo de efeitos visuais “mais ou menos” integrados …

Eu só tenho é a ligeira sensação que o AIGLX não gosta de funcionar com a driver proprietaria da ATI o que deixa o meu pc “out of the loop”
Não é sensação tua, é um facto. É incompatÃvel … Mas tipo, eu tenho o XGL a bombar com os drivers livres para a ATI. E o AIGLX também até que funciona no Mandriva, também com os drivers livres.
POrtanto a pergunta é – porque raio é que hás-de usar a merda dos drivers da ATI?
Rui, pelo que tenho lido os Drivers da ATI são realmente muito merdosos. Por acaso também tenho o XGL a correr com as Drivers livres… mas também não experimentei a outra versão proprietária (na ATI há duas versões…).
Aliás esse é o caso do AIXGL, pelo que li (once again, não é experiência minha), o AIXGL em Ubuntu corre bem mas com as Drivers OpenSource.
Não sei que placas vocês têm, mas assim que instalar digo como correu na minha ATI 9600 Pro e na minha Ati Mobility 9700.
ATI 9000 Mobile 128 RAM (não se riam) …
Quanto ás compatibilidades (isto é sacado do fedora, mas vai dar ao mesmo):
Video card status
Here is the current status as far as we know. We also intend to release driver updates in the yum repository as we get those cards to work. If your card isn’t supported, come back later to see if we’ve added support.
Note that this support status only affects new functionality; everything should work as well as it did before with the compositing manager disabled.

ATI: Radeon 7000 through X850 (r100 through r400 generations)
Intel: i830 through i945
nVidia: all cards supported by the driver 1.0-9625 which is currently released as a beta version
Occasionally / Possibly working
Intel: i810. Should work but not tested.
3dfx: voodoo3 through voodoo5. Might need NV_texture_rectangle emulation.
Known to not work
ATI: Rage 128. Looks like driver locking issue.
ATI: Mach64. No DRM support in Fedora, still insecure.
Matrox: MGA G200 to G550. Needs at least a driver update to fix DRI locking. PCI cards probably have other issues as well.
nVidia: No open DRI driver. Closed driver support available with the current beta drivers 1.0-9625.
3dfx: Voodoo 1 and 2. No DRI driver.
ATI: Radeon 8500 through X850 with the closed fglrx driver. Uses an ancient version of the DRI driver API that can’t work with the new driver loader. No ETA on closed driver support.
Eu uso a driver da ATI porque quando fui a ver a versão open-source só suportava até a 9200 (logo a minha 9600 ficava de fora)…
